That’s the purpose behind our Life Skills Academy, a vibrant hands-on learning environment that mirrors the everyday experiences children will encounter outside our center. Thoughtfully designed to look and feel like a real community, this space helps children with autism safely explore, practice, and master life skills that promote independence and confidence.
A Cityscape Designed for Learning
Step into a full sensory experience where every wall, floor, and feature is part of the lesson. Our center features a realistic streetscape complete with crosswalks, stop signs, traffic lights, sidewalks, and road markings that replicate a functioning city. The environment is bright, welcoming, and designed to help children feel like they’re stepping into their own world. Learning becomes intuitive, interactive, and fun.

The cityscape walls inside our Life Skills Academy are lined with bright, cheerful buildings that mimic real homes, shops, and community storefronts. Each illustrated house features colorful facades, windows, doors, and awnings that give the space a playful, welcoming feel. From townhouses with bold trim to storefronts with striped canopies and apartment-style windows, the design helps children feel immersed in a familiar and safe mini city. These visual elements stimulate imagination, support social story learning, and help children understand their place in the world through structured play.
Inside the Life Skills Academy
BTS Grocery Store
Children learn how to shop for everyday items, read labels, follow a shopping list, and interact with cashiers. This area supports executive functioning, money concepts, and social interaction.
Role-Play Kitchen and Cooking Area
Our Life Skills Academy features a fully equipped role-play kitchen where children can engage in pretend cooking activities using child-safe kitchen gadgets and play appliances. The setup includes an interactive stove that lights up, helping to simulate real kitchen experiences in a safe and engaging way. Children practice sequencing, cleaning up, setting the table, and participating in guided pretend play that supports communication, independence, and fine motor development. While the appliances are not functional, the environment encourages imagination and builds foundational life skills that transfer into real-world routines.
Laundry Practice with Real Machines
Our working washer and dryer give children the opportunity to sort, wash, dry, and fold clothes. This hands-on practice teaches responsibility and boosts independence.
Streets, Sidewalks, and Safety
Children navigate marked sidewalks and crosswalks with mock traffic lights and signage to practice pedestrian safety. Toy cars, streetlamps, and colorful buildings make each step a teachable moment.
Cash Register and Money Exchange Station
Our checkout area gives children the chance to practice real-world exchanges, count pretend money, and take turns playing shopper and cashier. These activities promote communication, math skills, and flexible thinking.
Why It Matters
The BTS Life Skills Academy bridges the gap between therapy and real life. By embedding skill-building in a familiar and structured environment, children are able to apply what they learn in therapy at home, in school, and in the community. Whether they are doing laundry, buying groceries, or learning how to safely cross the street, they are developing meaningful skills with purpose. We designed every part of this space to be functional, safe, and engaging. Therapy at BTS is not only effective, it is empowering, practical, and joyful.
