How We Support Adolescents and Teens

At Beyond The Spectrum ABA Therapy, we understand that adolescents and teens face a unique stage of growth, balancing independence, social development, and academic readiness. Our programs are designed to empower them with the confidence, competence, and real-world skills they need to thrive in school, at home, and in their communities.
We combine evidence-based ABA therapy with hands-on learning, academic readiness support, social skills groups, emotional intelligence and resilience training, and our signature Life Skills Academy to ensure each child is equipped for meaningful, lasting success.

Our Core Skill Areas

At Beyond The Spectrum, every adolescent and teen benefits from a personalized program that builds growth across key developmental skill areas.

Social & Emotional Regulation

We help children identify, express, and manage their emotions in healthy ways, develop empathy, and build meaningful peer connections through guided interactions and structured Social Skills Groups that foster communication, teamwork, and friendship-building.

Social Skills Development

Our structured Social Skills Group Program is a key component of this growth area. In small, age-appropriate peer groups, participants practice conversation, cooperation, empathy, and conflict resolution through guided play, role-play, and group practice opportunities.

Fine/Gross Motor & Executive Functioning

Through movement-based and hands-on activities, children strengthen both fine and gross motor coordination while improving cognitive skills such as attention, planning, organization, and problem-solving.

Sensory/Motor Regulation & Focus Tools

We use sensory-based interventions and focus tools to promote calm alertness and body awareness, including fidgets, tactile materials, and structured movement breaks that support concentration and self-regulation.

Communication & Generalisation

Our programs promote expressive and receptive language, conversation skills, and the ability to generalize new behaviors and communication strategies across different environments, including therapy, home, school, and community settings.

Social Skills Group Program

Building Confidence. Strengthening Friendships. Developing Real-World Skills.

Our Social Skills Group Program is one of the most popular components of our adolescent and teen services, and for good reason. These groups help children and teens learn the art of communication, cooperation, and confidence in a structured, supportive, and fun environment.
Each group is led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and trained Behavior Technicians, with age-appropriate peer groups that allow participants to practice social interaction in real time.

Through evidence-based activities, role-play, and small group practice, participants learn to:

  • Start, maintain, and end conversations appropriately
  • Understand body language, tone of voice, and social cues
  • Cooperate, share, and take turns during group activities
  • Build and maintain friendships
  • Handle teasing, conflict, and peer pressure
  • Develop empathy, kindness, and perspective-taking
  • Gain confidence in school, community, and social settings

Our social skills sessions also include “Social Fridays,” interactive indoor events where participants engage in fun, themed social challenges such as game days, communication cafés, mock stores, or teamwork-building projects. These activities allow children to generalize what they’ve learned in therapy to structured, real-life practice scenarios within our center’s safe and supportive environment.

Each child’s progress is tracked through individualized goals, and parents receive regular feedback and strategies to reinforce these social skills at home.

At Beyond The Spectrum, social growth is not just an activity; it’s a cornerstone of independence, confidence, and emotional wellness.

Academic Readiness and Learning Support

Our adolescent and teen programs integrate learning-based behavioral therapy to strengthen attention, comprehension, and executive functioning, the foundational skills that support success in the classroom and daily life.
We focus on:

  • Study and organization strategies that improve attention, memory, and task completion
  • Reading comprehension and communication support to build understanding and expression
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking activities that encourage reasoning and curiosity
  • Homework and classroom readiness coaching, including focus, time management, and persistence

We coordinate with families and, when appropriate, with educators to support consistency between home, school, and therapy environments, helping each child apply learned skills across all settings.

The Life Skills Academy

Our Life Skills Academy is a cornerstone of our adolescent and teen program, a hands-on, interactive curriculum that teaches practical, everyday skills for greater independence and self-confidence.
The Academy features a cityscape wall that recreates real-life environments, helping children learn community safety and navigation through activities such as understanding traffic lights, street crossing, and neighborhood awareness.
Through guided instruction and real-world simulations, participants learn:

  • Personal care, hygiene, and self-management
  • Laundry, cooking, cleaning, and household safety
  • Money handling, budgeting, and shopping skills
  • Community navigation, street safety, and social etiquette
  • Self-advocacy, communication, and teamwork

The Life Skills Academy empowers our children to move toward adulthood with readiness and pride, fostering the belief that they can live, work, and contribute meaningfully beyond therapy.

Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Growth

Adolescence is a time of rapid emotional and social change. Our programs nurture resilience, self-awareness, and social understanding through:

  • Peer group sessions and role-play that promote confidence and healthy interaction
  • Communication and conversation training that helps children express themselves appropriately and effectively
  • Self-regulation strategies using sensory tools, calming areas, and mindfulness activities
  • Executive function coaching to strengthen focus, organization, and adaptability

What Emotional Intelligence Means

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s own emotions, while also being able to understand and respond appropriately to the emotions of others.
In simpler terms, it’s about helping children learn to:

  • Identify how they feel (“I’m frustrated,” “I’m anxious,” “I’m proud,” etc.)
  • Express those feelings appropriately instead of through behaviors like withdrawal or aggression
  • Understand how others feel (empathy and perspective-taking)
  • Manage emotions in different situations, such as calming themselves when upset or coping with change
  • Build healthy relationships through communication, boundaries, and social awareness

Why It Matters in ABA and Child Development

For adolescents and teens, especially those with autism, emotional intelligence training helps:

  • Improve self-regulation and behavioral control
  • Strengthen social connections and peer relationships
  • Build self-awareness and confidence
  • Prepare for real-world challenges such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication in school or community settings

At Beyond The Spectrum, emotional intelligence is woven into social skills groups, role-play sessions, mindfulness exercises, and Life Skills Academy lessons, helping children apply these skills in real, meaningful ways.

Collaborative Pathways and Community Support

As our children grow, we recognize the importance of preparing for transitions into higher levels of independence and community participation.
We:

  • Collaborate with families, schools, and community partners to identify appropriate transition resources
  • Refer families to external organizations that specialize in workforce readiness or educational planning
  • Reinforce the behavioral and adaptive skills that build a foundation for future success in any environment

A Therapeutic and Engaging Environment

Our center is designed to feel safe, inspiring, and age-appropriate.
We incorporate:

  • Social-skills and cooperative games to reinforce teamwork and empathy
  • Creative arts, music, and design projects to foster expression and confidence
  • Sensory zones and movement breaks to support focus and self-regulation
  • Interactive learning materials and technology-based tools to make therapy engaging and relevant

Preparing for Adulthood

Every adolescent and teen at Beyond The Spectrum receives an individualized program that supports their transition into adulthood. We collaborate closely with families, schools, and community partners to ensure that the skills developed in therapy are applied in daily life, preparing each child for independence and future opportunities.
At Beyond The Spectrum, we don’t just prepare our children for the future; we equip them to build it.
